I think the location is good and the room is cosy, clean and warm

I think the location is good and the room is cosy, clean and warm. However, I do not like the fire alarms, the inspections and the kitchen. The kitchen has two different drains which is very inconvenient. The food is bad. The staff is the best, I love them. Everyone who work there is very nice! They made my stay the best!

The home and the area around it

Energy certificate (EPC)

Homes in Scotland are on the Scottish EPC Register. Look up this home’s certificate there by its postcode. The landlord or agent must also show it to you before you rent.

What each rating means

AExcellent: very low bills, and it keeps warm easily.
BVery good: lower bills than most homes.
CGood: better than a typical home.
DAverage: typical bills, and some rooms can be slow to heat.
EBelow average: higher bills, and it can feel cold or draughty.
FPoor: high bills, hard to keep warm, and a higher risk of damp.
GVery poor: very high bills and a cold home.

Our advice: whatever the rating, ask for last winter’s energy bills before you sign, and check for draughts, condensation and mould.

Safety: what the police publish

Police Scotland doesn’t publish crime figures street by street, so we can’t show them for this postcode. The Scottish Government publishes recorded crime for each council area, including Fife, once a year.

Recorded crime in Scotland (gov.scot)

What this means for you. We can’t show figures for this postcode, but the advice below helps anywhere you live.

Do

  • Walk the street in the evening as well as in the day before you sign, and check the front door, the locks and how the entrance works.
  • Use your phone away from the kerb, ideally with your back to a wall or inside a shop, and keep looking around you.
  • Use cash machines inside banks or shops when you can, especially after dark. Cover the keypad and put your cash and card away before you walk off.
  • Lock the door and windows, even when you’re in, and plan a well-lit route home at night.
  • Save 999 for emergencies and 101 for everything else. On trains and at stations, text British Transport Police on 61016.

Don’t

  • Don’t walk along with your phone held out near the road, where thieves on bikes and scooters can grab it.
  • Don’t count your cash at the machine, or accept “help” from a stranger there. If anything looks stuck to the card slot, use another machine.
  • Don’t leave bags, phones or laptops on view in a car or on a café table.
  • Don’t let strangers follow you in through the building’s front door.

Bills: council tax and energy

Which band is this home? We don’t know the exact band. The advert should show it, or ask the agent. You can also look it up for free on the Scottish Assessors’ website. Flats are usually in bands A to D.

A month is the year spread over 12 months. Councils usually take 10 payments (April to January), but you can ask for 12. Source: Scottish Government.

Pay less

  • You’re the only adult living there: 25% off.
  • Everyone is a full-time student: no council tax (and no water charges). Send the council the student certificate from your university or college.
  • You live with students: they aren’t counted, so if you’re the only other adult, you get 25% off.
  • Low income or on benefits: Council Tax Reduction can cut the bill, in some councils to nothing.
  • A disabled person needs extra space for their needs, like a room or room for a wheelchair: the bill can go down by one band.
  • Some people aren’t counted, like under-18s, apprentices, student nurses and live-in carers.
  • Each tenant rents a room in a shared house: the landlord usually pays.

Register when you move in

  1. Tell Fife council on its website within a few days of moving in: your moving-in date, the landlord’s or agent’s details and every adult who lives there.
  2. Apply for any discount at the same time, on the same website.
  3. When you move out, tell them the date, so you only pay until then.
